A suite is not a small house

Moving from a family home into a retirement suite is not a matter of bringing less. A suite works differently. There is one main room doing the job of three, a small closet, maybe a kitchenette, and a bathroom that needs clear space around it. Furniture that looked modest in the old living room can swallow a suite whole.

Get it wrong and the room feels cramped and hard to move around in. Get it right and it feels like a smaller version of home. The difference is in the planning, and that is where we start.

How we plan a move into a residence

We see the suite first. We measure it and work out what fits, keeping walking paths clear and the favourite chair near the window.
We choose the pieces with the person moving. The bed, the chair, a dresser, a small table, the pictures and the things on the shelves that make it theirs.
We coordinate with the residence. Elevator booking, loading area, move in window and any rules the building has.
We move and set up the same day. Bed made, clothes hung, pictures up, television working, boxes gone.
We deal with what is left at the house. Family pieces, donations, resale and clearing out, on the same plan.

Floor to floor, or into memory care

Needs change, and residences move people between suites and levels of care all the time. These moves are small, but they usually come up fast, and they land on a family that is already stretched.

Call us. Two movers, in and out, the same routine every time. We pack the suite, move it, and set the new one up to match the old one as closely as the space allows, so the change is as gentle as it can be. We can often be there the same week.

For a move into memory care, matching matters even more. The same bedspread, the same photographs in the same order, the same chair facing the same way. Familiar things in familiar places help a new room feel known.

For residence staff and move in coordinators

If you work at a retirement residence in Waterloo Region, you already know that the move itself is what stalls a lot of families. They have chosen the suite, and then the house stops them cold.

We are a downsizing and moving partner you can hand to the families you serve. There is no fee to the residence and no exclusivity. One call and we handle the move, from the first sort to the last picture, on the move in date you have agreed with the family. Call or text us and we will come by and introduce ourselves.

The house still has to be dealt with

Once your parent is settled, the family home is still sitting there full. We empty it, get family pieces where they are going, donate and sell what can be, and clean it so it is ready to list or hand back. If the house is being sold, we work hand in hand with our real estate partner, and when the home is listed with them the transition is included.

One written price

We walk the home and see the suite, then give you one written price for the whole thing before anything starts. It is never billed by the hour.

Questions families ask

The suite is available next week. Is that too soon?

Usually not. Moves into a residence often come together quickly. We can move the essentials and set the suite up first, then deal with the rest of the house afterward at a calmer pace.

Will you work with the residence directly?

Yes. We book the elevator and the move in time with the residence and follow their building rules, so you do not have to be the go between.

Can you set up the room before my parent arrives?

Yes, and we recommend it. Many families take their parent out for lunch while we work, and bring them back to a finished room.

Do you handle moves between residences?

Yes. Residence to residence, floor to floor, and into memory care or long term care.
