Why a senior move is a different job

A regular move is about getting boxes from one address to another as fast as possible. That works fine when you are thirty and can live out of boxes for a month. It does not work for someone in their eighties who needs their bed made, their medications where they expect them, and a clear path to the bathroom on the very first night.

A senior move is slower on purpose. It takes more care with the furniture, more patience with the person, and it does not end when the truck is empty. It ends when the new home is set up and livable.

What we do on a senior move

Here is the whole job, start to finish.

Plan the new space. We look at the new home or suite first, so we know what fits and where it goes before anything is loaded.
Pack with care. Dishes, pictures, lamps and keepsakes are wrapped and boxed properly. Boxes are labelled by room.
Protect the furniture. Every piece is wrapped before it leaves the house. Doorways and floors are looked after at both ends.
Move it. Load, transport and carry in, with each piece placed where it belongs, not stacked in the middle of the room.
Set up the home. Bed assembled and made. Kitchen unpacked. Clothes in the closet. Pictures on the wall. Television and lamps plugged in and working.
Take the mess away. Boxes and packing material leave with us.

The first night matters most

Ask anyone who has moved a parent and they will tell you the same thing. The hardest moment is the first evening, when the family has gone home and your mother is alone in a new place that does not feel like hers yet.

So we work backwards from that moment. The bed gets set up first, with her own bedding. The chair she always sits in goes by the window. The photographs go up where she can see them. The kettle is on the counter and the mugs are in the cupboard above it. It is a small thing to arrange a room the way someone likes it, and it makes all the difference in how the first week goes.

Moving into a retirement residence

Moving into a residence comes with its own rules. There is usually a booked elevator, a loading area, a time window, and a suite that is a good deal smaller than the home being left. We plan around all of that, and we coordinate the timing with the residence so the family does not have to.

We also do quick moves inside a residence, floor to floor or into memory care, often on short notice.

Patience is part of the job

Moving day is tiring and emotional at any age. Our crew is there to work calmly around the person moving, not to rush them. If someone wants to watch their china cabinet being wrapped, they can. If they need to sit for a while, the day carries on around them.

For days when you would like someone focused only on your parent, we offer a Care Day. A companion spends the day with them while the crew works. It is companionship, not medical or personal care.

One written price

We come out for a free walkthrough, see what the move will take, and give you one written price before anything starts. It is not billed by the hour, so a slow elevator or a long goodbye to the neighbours does not cost you more.

Questions families ask

Do you pack, or do we need to pack ourselves?

We can do all of it, some of it or none of it. Most families have us pack everything, because it is the part that takes the longest and the part where things get broken.

Can you move someone in a single day?

For most apartments, condos and retirement suites, yes. Pack, move and set up can often be done in one day so the person sleeps in their own made bed that night. Larger homes are planned over more than one day.

What if the new place is much smaller?

That is the usual case. We look at the new space first and help work out what fits. Whatever is not coming can go to family, donation, resale or storage, and we handle all of that.

Can you deliver some furniture to family members?

Yes. Extra stops for family pieces are common and we plan them into the same job.
